Which activity does “Manufacture of air and spacecraft and related machinery” most resemble in its financial ratios?

For people who work in the sectorIn plain languageFor machines (JSON)

The answer

Support activities for animal production, at 0.7733 across the 25 ratios both activities publish. The resemblance runs one way: this activity is not among the 8 nearest that support activities for animal production publishes for itself.

Two lists in the same files show how distant this match is. The 8 nearest activities published for support activities for animal production carry resemblance values between 0.9691 and 0.9236. The 8 nearest published for this activity run from 0.7733 down to 0.6537. 0.7733 belongs to this activity’s nearest match and still describes a distant one.

The next activity’s resemblance value is lower: 0.6794 against 0.7733.

In the other activity’s own ordering this one sits at 30, outside the 8 it publishes.

This activity’s nearestThe other activity’s nearest

Each dot is one of the 8 nearest activities a list publishes, on an axis that runs from zero to one. The upper row is this activity’s list, opening at 0.7733; the lower row is the list support activities for animal production publishes for itself, opening at 0.9691.

How distant, against every other activity

Across the 782 activities that have a nearest match at this cut, the average nearest match scores 0.8632. A tenth of them score 0.7632 or less and a quarter 0.8268 or less. This pair’s 0.7733 falls between those two, so between three quarters and nine tenths of the activities have a nearer closest match than this one.

Both published lists, in full

Every activity each of the two publishes as one of its nearest, in the publisher’s own order. Turkish activity names are TCMB’s own; the English titles are Eurostat’s official NACE Rev. 2 class titles for the same codes.

The ratios the two profiles diverge most on

The ratios that contribute most to the distance between the two profiles, with each activity’s published median beside it. A resemblance is a direction across many ratios, not an agreement on each one.

What was compared

The comparison runs over activities classified at the same depth — level 4 of the classification — and uses the ratios both activities publish: 25 of the 35 in the model for this pair, against a minimum of 20.

At this cut 803 activities publish a usable set of ratios, 782 of them have at least one comparable activity, and 757 are placed on the map the work draws.

At this depth — level 4 of the classification — 484 activities were available to match against.

What this cannot establish

  • Only the 8 nearest activities are published for each one, so “not in that list” is what was measured — not that the two do not resemble each other at all from the other side.
  • The two are compared on the 25 ratios both publish, not on all 35 in the model. A ratio one of them does not publish is not in the measurement at all.
  • The figures are published medians for each activity, so the resemblance is between two activities and says nothing about any company inside either of them.
  • Nothing here explains why the two profiles point the same way. A shared direction across published ratios is what was measured; a reason for it was not.
  • The figures are computed on one cut of the data, named above. In the newer classification a more recent edition uses, this activity’s code no longer exists, so the comparison could not be repeated there and nothing here says what it would show.

Method

Each ratio is put on one scale before any distance is taken: a sector's published median minus the average of all sectors' medians at this cut, divided by their standard deviation. Standardised values are held at ±3.0 so that a handful of extreme sectors do not set the scale for the rest; 410 of 26,422 values were held. The published figures themselves are never changed — the limit lives inside this measurement.

Resemblance is the cosine of two standardised profiles — how nearly they point the same way across the ratios both sectors publish. It measures shape, not size, and it is not a judgement: two sectors can resemble each other closely and one of them still be in trouble.
