Which line of business does aircraft manufacturing most resemble in its published financial ratios?

What is being measured
Every year the central bank publishes tables on what companies in each line of business own, what they owe, and what their sales and profits are. Those figures include ratios such as debt against assets, stock against assets and profit against sales. That is what lets a large line of business and a small one be compared.
Together those ratios show a line of business’s financial structure. Two lines of business can have similar ratios with nothing else in common. Only those ratios are compared here.
The resemblance between two lines of business’s financial ratios takes a value between zero and one. The nearer the value is to one, the greater the resemblance. To make that value readable, the answer below also shows the other matches published for both lines of business.
The answer
Support activities for animal production covers the businesses that work for livestock farms. Across the 25 ratios published for both, the resemblance is 0.7733 on that zero-to-one scale. Appearing in each other’s lists works in one direction only: aircraft manufacturing’s list of closest matches opens with animal support work, while animal support work’s own list of closest matches does not contain aircraft manufacturing.
0.7733 is the highest resemblance value aircraft manufacturing reaches with any of the lines of business it is compared against. In the same files animal support work’s own nearest match sits at 0.9691, and all 8 of the matches published for it carry a resemblance above 0.7733. Aircraft manufacturing does not much resemble the lines of business it is compared against. Animal support work is its nearest match, and that match is a distant one.
There are 782 lines of business with a closest match in these files. In a tenth of them the closest match is 0.7632 or less; in a quarter it is 0.8268 or less. Aircraft manufacturing’s closest match is 0.7733, which falls between those two. So between three quarters and nine tenths of these lines of business have a closer match than aircraft manufacturing does.

What this comparison cannot show
- A resemblance does not mean the two lines of business are doing equally well or equally badly. The comparison measures how alike their ratios are, not how sound their finances are.
- It does not mean the two are the same size. Size is deliberately taken out before the comparison, so that a big business and a small one can be compared at all.
- It gives no information about any single company. Each published figure is the median value computed for a whole line of business.
- The comparison measures how alike two lines of business’s financial ratios are. It does not explain why they are alike.
- The figures rest on one year of published accounts. A newer edition has been published since and carries no data for aircraft manufacturing in the new classification it uses, so the comparison was not repeated there.
